TTY/TDD Telephone Devices

TTY/TDD Telephone Devices for the Hearing Impaired
TTY/TDD (Teletypewriter/Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) is a terminal used for two-way text conversation over a telephone line. It is used primarily by the hearing impaired for telephone conversations.

The Infinity interface to TTY devices allows a person operating one of these devices to communicate with an Infinity operator. Communication is accomplished by allowing the TTY user and the Infinity operator to type messages back and forth.

TTY devices can place a phone call to the TTY modems by calling the phone number connected to the modems. When a phone call is received on the TTY modems, messages are sent to Infinity via the serial interface, alerting Infinity about the incoming call. Infinity uses this alert to generate a call that is distributed to an Infinity operator. When the Infinity operator answers the call, a chat window is opened in the Infinity Windows Operator application. The chat window allows the Infinity operator to see the text that the TTY user is typing and allows the operator to type responses back to the TTY user. A record of all text received from the TTY device and all text entered by the operator is saved in the Infinity MDR database. This allows you to generate reports to view, or print the text conversations for each TTY call.
