AMTELCO Granted Patent for ePOP, Telephone Number/Web Page (URL) Look-Up
McFarland, WI-While a number of high-powered players
have been scrambling to integrate Internet accessibility and Web functionality
into their CTI applications, one company was quietly doing business as usual.
AMTELCO, the manufacturer and distributor of the full-featured Infinity automated
call distribution and unified messaging system based in suburban Madison,
Wisconsin, incorporated web functionality into its Infinity system in August
1998 and applied for a patent on its functionality.
AMTELCO first installed its ePOP application at a customer's site in October
1998. AMTELCO's vision was recognized when the company received a U.S. Patent
on October 31st for its ePOP process, officially titled a Telephone Number/Web
Page Look-up Apparatus and Method on the patent document US 6,141,413.
"This is a huge step for AMTELCO," said corporate president, Tom Curtin. "The
applications for this patent, the ePOP process, have wide-ranging potential
for the contact center industry, the wireless industry and many others."
"ePOP" software associates an incoming call with an Internet page. Let's
say you are at your desk, your phone rings and simultaneously your PC screen
displays the caller's web site. Or better yet, it displays the caller's contact
management record. By having this information up front, you can handle calls
more efficiently, which saves you valuable time and helps you close the deal,
all because of real-time information. ePOP can be applied to any phone or
web-enabled device, such as digital wireless phones, PCs, PDAs (Personal Digital
Assistant) and literally any web-enabled technology," Tom Curtin said. Founded
in 1976, AMTELCO has been a trusted name in the answering service industry
for many years. Millions of calls a day are processed by Infinity systems
in call centers, contact centers, healthcare facilities, executive suites,
university campuses and private offices throughout the world.
"The success of the open platform Infinity system is its 'contact center in
a box' design, meaning that Infinity supplies all the applications a contact
center would need from just one server," Tom Curtin said.
Frost and Sullivan, consultants for the contact center market, in a 1998 report
stated that "Call centers are moving away from traditional voice-centric environments
to multimedia customer contact centers that can process 'calls' irrespective
of their point of origin (web, phone, fax) and irrespective of their form
(voice, text, image)".
"Contact centers worldwide are expanding and acknowledging the profitability
associated with integrating web-enabled features," Tom Curtin said. "Any contact
center vendor, wireless vendor, or contact management software supplier may
integrate ePOP into their application."
AMTELCO continues to update and improve its computer telephony integration
technologies. AMTELCO has been granted more than fifteen U.S. Patents for
telephone messaging and switching equipment, since the company was founded
in 1976.
